Awnings are an indispensable part of your Bürstner. They offer protection from the sun and extend the usable living area. Regular maintenance is particularly important to ensure that the awning works reliably for many years.
General care instructions
The service life of the awning depends largely on proper cleaning and maintenance. Environmental factors such as pollen, dust, rain or mould can affect both the material and the mechanism.
How to care for an awning properly:
- Do not use harsh cleaning agents or high-pressure cleaners.
- Use soft brushes or sponges.
- Treat stains immediately to avoid permanent discolouration.
- Allow the awning to dry completely before retracting it.
Cleaning techniques according to material type
- Vinyl awnings (for retrofit): Vinyl awnings should be cleaned with gall soap or mild hand detergent and lukewarm water. Gentle wiping is crucial, not scrubbing. If necessary, the awning can be treated with an impregnating agent to ensure that it retains its functionality.
- Acrylic awnings (ex works at Bürstner): Bürstner only uses acrylic awnings ex works. These should only be cleaned with clean water, as soaps or detergents can damage the fibres. Air drying in the shade helps to keep the colour of the awning stable.
Maintenance of the mechanics
- Check joints, screws and brackets regularly for tightness.
- Lubricate moving parts with silicone spray or Teflon oil.
- For electric awnings: Check cables and motor regularly for proper function.
Recommendations directly from the manufacturer
Thule: For vinyl cloths, the manufacturer recommends Thule PVC Cleaner, which has been specially developed for cleaning and maintaining PVC awning fabrics. Acrylic cloths, on the other hand, should only be cleaned with clear water, as cleaning agents can damage the fibres. High-pressure cleaners and aggressive chemicals should always be avoided in order not to impair the material structure and impregnation. For repairing small tears and holes, Thule offers Repair Patches: transparent, self-adhesive PVC strips (7.5 × 15 cm) that are suitable for both PVC and acrylic fabrics. They are applied to the cleaned damaged area and can be used on the inside and outside of the awning fabric.
Dometic: To care for PVC awnings, the manufacturer recommends a mixture of washing-up liquid and bleach (30 g washing-up liquid + 30 g bleach to 10 l water), which must be rinsed thoroughly with clear water after a contact time of about five minutes. Acrylic fabrics, on the other hand, should only be cleaned with clear water or a mild soap solution, as aggressive agents can damage the fibres. Joints and mechanical parts should be lubricated regularly with paraffin wax, Teflon or silicone oil in order to maintain ease of movement and freedom from corrosion. For repairs, Dometic offers special products such as Repair Tape, Repair Solution and Seam Sealant, which are suitable for synthetic and natural materials. These are colourless, flexible, washable and ideal for sealing seams, repairing tears or holes in awning fabrics, tents and other outdoor materials.
Environmentally friendly care
To maintain your Bürstner awning in an environmentally friendly way, use biodegradable cleaning agents to avoid harmful chemicals. Ensure that the awning dries completely to prevent mould and the release of spores. These sustainable measures help you to extend the service life of your awning and at the same time contribute to more environmentally friendly camping comfort.
Care interval recommendation
- Dry brushing: monthly
- Wet cleaning: 1-2× per season
- Check & lubricate mechanics: semi-annually
- Renew impregnation: if necessary (water absorption visible)
💡 Our tip
Think about the winter break! The awning should be thoroughly cleaned and completely dried before prolonged periods of non-use, such as over the winter. This prevents mould growth and material damage caused by moisture. If possible, we recommend covering or removing the awning to protect it from the weather.
