Winter camping is becoming increasingly popular, whether in the Alps, in Scandinavia or simply in frosty temperatures in Germany. But not every motorhome or caravan is made for such conditions. Although Bürstner offers winterised vehicles in accordance with EN 1646-1 level 2 as standard, additional conversions are required for true winter resistance in accordance with level 3. Here you can find out what the standard requires and what options Bürstner offers - for motorhomes and caravans alike.
Winter resistance according to EN 1646-1
DIN EN 1646-1 distinguishes between two levels:
- Level 2 - Suitable for winter: At an outdoor temperature of 0 °C, the interior must heat up to +20 °C within 2 hours. Measurements are taken 1 m above the floor in the centre of the room. The water system is not tested.
- Level 3 - Winterproof: At an outdoor temperature of -15 °C, the interior must heat up to +20 °C within 4 hours. The maximum permitted temperature deviation is 7 °C at five other measuring points. After one hour of stabilisation, water must flow, free of frost damage.
Bürstner: Standard equipment and winter packages
Bürstner does not currently offer any vehicles - neither motorhomes nor caravans - with Level 3 certification, but many models are equipped with a winter package that contains important components for winter use:
- Truma Combi 6 E or Combi 6 D E diesel heater
- Electric underfloor heating
- Heated seats for driver and passenger (for motorhomes)
- Insulated and heated waste water tank
- Thermo double floor, e.g. in the Lyseo TD
This equipment significantly improves heat distribution and comfort, but is not sufficient for official level 3 certification.
Realistic or overambitious?
Level 3 of EN 1646-1 is demanding and is only officially fulfilled by a few manufacturers. Bürstner vehicles offer solid winter suitability and for many campers the equipment with winter package is sufficient, especially for moderate winter use or on pitches with a power connection. However, if you want to be self-sufficient and permanently in the snow, you should pay particular attention to level 3 components.
ℹ️ Note
Some customers report that they achieve even more comfort with additional measures such as special insulation mats. These can help to create a more even heat distribution in the front and rear areas of both motorhomes and caravans.
💡 Our tip
Moisture can be a major problem in winter. Ensure sufficient ventilation to keep the interior dry.
